Water Games for Kids (Outdoor, Party, Camps)

Summer’s here, and so are your vacations.

Summer brings scorching heat, pool parties, and a lot of fun.

Kids are filled with energy, be it summer or winter.

They want to play and run around irrespective of the weather.

It is difficult to come up with ideas that would keep them occupied but also not give them a heat stroke.

To make things easier for you, we bring to you a collection of 8 outdoor water games for kids.

1. Sponge Relay

A splashy team game where players race to transfer water using only a sponge, perfect for cooling off while building teamwork.

Requirements:

  • 2 large buckets per team (one full of water)

  • 1 large sponge per team

How to Play:

Divide players into teams and place one full bucket at the starting line and an empty one at the finish line. Players take turns soaking the sponge, running to the empty bucket, and squeezing the water in.

The race continues until the starting bucket is empty or the finish bucket overflows. The team with the most water transferred wins.

2. Water Balloon Toss

A fun challenge of coordination and laughter as pairs toss water balloons back and forth without bursting them.

Requirements:

  • Filled water balloons

  • Open space

How to Play:

Pair players up and have them stand a short distance apart. They toss a water balloon back and forth, taking a step back after each successful catch. The game continues until the balloon pops. The last pair with an unbroken balloon wins.

3. Drip, Drip, Drop

A wet twist on “Duck, Duck, Goose” that keeps everyone laughing and soaked.

Requirements:

  • Small cup or sponge

  • Water

How to Play:

Players sit in a circle while one child walks around with a cup or sponge dripping water on each head, saying “drip.” When they say “drop,” they dump the water on someone’s head and run. The soaked player chases them around the circle trying to tag them before they reach the empty spot.

4. Water Limbo

A refreshing version of limbo using a stream of water instead of a stick.

Requirements:

  • Garden hose with a spray nozzle or water blaster

  • Open space

How to Play:

One person holds the hose and creates a horizontal stream of water. Players take turns leaning backward and attempting to limbo under the water without getting sprayed. The stream gets lower each round. Anyone who touches the stream or falls is out.

5. Fill the Bottle

A fast-paced game where players race to fill up a bottle using only a sponge or cup of water.

Requirements:

  • Empty plastic bottles

  • Cups or sponges

  • Buckets of water

How to Play:

Each child dips their sponge or cup into the water bucket and races to squeeze or pour it into their empty bottle. They run back and forth until their bottle is full. The first one to fill it wins the round.

6. Sprinkler Freeze Dance

A splashy version of freeze dance that combines music and water fun.

Requirements:

  • Sprinkler

  • Music player

How to Play:

Turn on the sprinkler and play some fun music while kids dance and jump through the water. When the music stops, they must freeze immediately. Anyone caught moving after the music stops is out. Last one dancing wins!

7. Water Cup Head Relay

A goofy and wet relay game where players carry water in cups balanced on their heads.

Requirements:

  • Plastic cups

  • Buckets

  • Open space

How to Play:

Players fill a cup with water, place it on their head, and walk or race to a finish line where they pour it into a bucket. They run back and tag the next teammate. The team that fills their bucket first or has the most water wins.

8. Splash Tag

A simple game of tag with an exciting water twist—no one stays dry for long!

Requirements:

  • Water squirters, sponges, or cups

  • Open outdoor space

How to Play:

One player is “It” and chases the others, trying to tag them using a water squirter, sponge, or by tossing a cup of water. Once someone gets soaked, they become the new “It.” The game continues until everyone’s had a turn or time runs out.
